The KU Medical Center Area Health Education Center’s Sizzlin’ Summer symposium continues on July 14-15, 2016 in Hays, Kansas. The two-day program is being held at Whiskey Creek, 3203 N. Vine St.

Each year, the Sizzlin’ Summer symposium focuses on either a theme of topics or specific topics. This year, the first day will include presentations by health care professionals from Hays Medical Center, The Center for Life Experiences and High Plains Mental Health on how health care professionals can engage and communicate more effectively with patients and their families through various stages of life. The second day will focus on pain management presented by Melanie H. Simpson, Ph.D., RN-BC, OCN, CHPN, CPE, Team Coordinator, Pain Management Resource Team, The University of Kansas Hospital. Simpson will present on the basics of pain, multimodal analgesia pain regimes, empowering patients and families with nonpharmacologic interventions and end-of-life concerns in managing pain.

Topics for this annual symposium were determined based on past program evaluations as well as conducting a needs assessment survey with the education coordinators of facilities in western Kansas.
