Douglas A. Girod, M.D., appointed Chancellor of KU; Robert D. Simari, M.D., named Executive Vice Chancellor

The Kansas Board of Regents announced the appointment of Douglas A. Girod, M.D., executive vice chancellor of the University of Kansas Medical Center, as the 18th Chancellor of the University of Kansas, effective July 1.

The University of Kansas Medical Center, in consultation with The University of Kansas Health System and The University of Kansas Physicians, announced that Robert D. Simari, M.D., the Franklin E. Murphy Professor in Cardiology, will serve as interim executive vice chancellor for the University of Kansas Medical Center. Simari will assume the interim EVC role July 1 and will continue as executive dean for the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

Girod became executive vice chancellor of the University of Kansas Medical Center on Feb. 1, 2013, where he oversaw the educational, research, patient care and community engagement missions of the University of Kansas Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Health Professions, with their total annual enrollment of more than 3,300 students; a workforce of more than 2,100 faculty and more than 4,000 staff; and research funding of nearly $100 million.

A 1986 alumnus of the KU School of Medicine, Simari has served as executive dean since March 2014. He currently serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the School of Medicine and provides oversight and leadership to all three medical school campuses: Kansas City, Wichita and Salina.
